Pressure Washing vs Soft Washing: What's the Difference?

Not sure whether your property needs pressure washing or soft washing? Learn the key differences between these two cleaning methods and when each one should be used.

When it comes to cleaning exterior surfaces, two main methods dominate: pressure washing and soft washing. Understanding the difference between them — and knowing when to use each — is crucial for getting the best results without damaging your property.

What is Pressure Washing?

Pressure washing (also called jet washing) uses high-pressure water delivered through a specialised machine to blast away dirt, grime, algae, moss, and other contaminants from hard surfaces. The water pressure typically ranges from 1,500 to 4,000 PSI (pounds per square inch).

Best Used For:

  • Concrete driveways and paths
  • Block paving
  • Patios (stone, concrete, porcelain)
  • Garage floors and forecourts
  • Steps and kerbing
  • Commercial car parks and pavements

What is Soft Washing?

Soft washing uses low-pressure water combined with specialist cleaning solutions to clean more delicate surfaces. The cleaning solutions (typically biodegradable biocides and surfactants) do the heavy lifting, breaking down and killing organic growth at its root. The low-pressure rinse then washes everything away.

Best Used For:

  • Rendered walls (K-rend, monocouche, silicone)
  • Painted surfaces
  • Roofing tiles and slates
  • Wooden cladding and fencing
  • UPVC fascias and soffits
  • Conservatory roofs
  • Delicate natural stone

Why Does It Matter?

Using the wrong method can cause serious damage:

  • High pressure on render: Can blow holes in the surface, strip paint, or force water behind the render causing damp.
  • High pressure on roofing: Can crack tiles, dislodge ridge pointing, and void roofing guarantees.
  • High pressure on wood: Can splinter timber, raise the grain, and cause irreparable damage.
  • Soft washing on block paving: Won't provide enough force to remove ground-in dirt and weeds from joints.

Our Approach: The Right Method for Every Surface

At Leicester Jet Washers, we don't take a one-size-fits-all approach. Our team assesses every surface and selects the appropriate cleaning method to deliver the best results safely. Many jobs actually use a combination of both methods — for example, pressure washing the driveway and soft washing the adjacent rendered walls.
